Posted on Saturday, July 10, 2004 Job hunters, Google this PUZZLE ON 101 A JOB AD IN DISGUISE By Michael Bazeley San Jose Mercury News Hoping to tickle the minds of Silicon Valley's brightest engineers, the simple black-on-white billboard by a famous Internet company displays nothing more than a mathematical puzzle to drivers on Highway 101: {first 10-digit prime found in consecutive digits of e}.com The answer leads to a Web site, where another math question awaits. Those who solve that one get the prize: the chance to submit their resume to Google Labs through a special e-mail address. "As you can imagine, we get many, many resumes every day, so we developed this process to increase the signal-to-noise ratio," says a message on the Google jobs page. A spokeswoman for the Mountain View Internet search company wouldn't talk about the unique job-recruiting tactic. But the billboard, on southbound 101 just before the Ralston Avenue exit in Belmont, is part of a national campaign to lure top engineers to Google. Ads are also running in publications such as Mensa Bulletin, the magazine for people with high IQs, and the MIT Technology Review. No word yet on how many responses Google has received. But there was a traffic accident on Highway 101 near the billboard Friday morning. A distracted wannabe Google engineer, perhaps? Click Here for the Answer |
