Teaching with HyperDocs- A Comma Lesson

For our discussion, please comment/reflect on the following pieces:
1. What do you feel like are the most important parts of the HyperDoc?
2. What are some of the teaching strategies you noticed in the lesson with students?
(i.e. what are some of the things the teacher does, what are the students doing, etc)?
3. What "ah ha"s or "take aways" did you have after watching this video?
(Was there anything that surprised you? Was there something that was
new to you? Was there something that you hadn't considered, etc?)
4. Please also comment on another class member's response after you post yours.

(1) What do you feel like are the most important parts of the HyperDoc?
Most important part of the HyperDocs is "Engage"— hook the students' attention. At 0.33 of Comma Video is a slide showing Watch: Commas Song before Read: 8 Comma Rules. The "Comma Song" was not shown. Found this 4.20 video "Hey! Oh! / Watch my commas separate!" with "Commas help me / to separate things" & examples of commas in short texts.
Good example using commas separating gifts given on the "12 Days of Christmas": "Twelve drummers drumming, Eleven pipers piping, Ten lords a-leaping, Nine ladies dancing, Eight maids a-milking, Seven swans a-swimming, Six geese a-laying, Five golden rings, Four calling birds, Three French hens, Two turtle doves and A partridge in a pear tree."
(2) What are some of the teaching strategies you noticed in the lesson with students?
It's important that "Watch: Commas Song" was shown before "Read: 8 Comma Rules". Students would be bored learning the 8 Comma Rules— Compound Sentences, Words in a List, Dependent Clauses, Appositive, Introductory Words, Direct Address, Cities and States, Dates.
Music will always grab students' attention more than reading texts. So showing jazz musicians blowing trumpets and dancing will engage student while showing comma usage examples. Then proceed to the "8 Comma Rules" afterwards. One usage of commas that was omitted from the "Comma Rules" is their separating three zeros (000) in large numbers— 2 commas in Million 1,000,000; 3 commas in Billion 1,000,000,000; 4 commas in Trillion 1,000, 000,000,000.
(3) What "ah ha"s or "take aways" did you have after watching this video?
I like the video of actual classroom teaching with students in rapt attention to the instructor showing them books, and screen slides and videos to keep them alert. With several raising their hands to questions, this shows their engagement to what is happening in the classroom. Students were shown getting laptops and finding lessons where they could respond to in Google Docs templates. With 3 students assigned to one laptop, they could discuss among themselves the issues presented and their responses. The faces of these young students show their eagerness to learn. With HyperDocs, teachers have a powerful tool in the learning process. "Ah ha" is a leap in consciousness similar to "Eureka" where we make a surprising discovery. Robert Bly liked my poem "The Aha Moment" written in his Stanford class (5-6-2008) and Notes (6-9-2008).

Liked Heather Clealand's idea of comparing HyperDocs to a Dance Choreography, that all parts are essential for a dance performance. I've focused on Engage as the most important— to grab the students' attention. But all parts are equally essential to complete the whole work. Her observation of the teacher asking questions to prompt students' thinking is an effective strategy in teaching them. Working in groups of three allow them to collaborate and explore as a team on one laptop help them bounce ideas around. Her "ah ha"s are the device-free time at beginning of the class and at the end for reflection and further questionings so students are not glued to their computers all the time. Liked her overall insights on this HyperDocs class on commas.
